Yurts or Gers?
The word "yurt " has become a generic term used for circular tented structures from Turkey through to Mongolia. It is a much misused term and it has confused many people. The structure that comes from Mongolia is known as a "Ger". It usually has low walls and a low roof with straight roof ribs joined by a heavy "crown" that usually requires at least two supports to hold it up.Mongolians are not known for being tall. A "yurt" on the other hand, traditionally comes from Khyrgistan (Turkey and East) and differs in that it has bent roof ribs and hence has greater roof height throughout. Because of the additional work required in steam bending the wood for the yurt, and the subsequent finishing - a yurt is usually more expensive than a ger. Further, because of the bending, yurts usually need to be made of hardwood -whilst gers can, and are often made out of any soft wood. They are mainly painted, which hides the quality of timber and the amount of filler. (Please believe that we have had to deal with these issues for very well meaning customers who have bought in good faith and found out to their cost). If you are tempted to buy an imported Ger from Mongolia, for whatever reason, please check that it is actually coming from Mongolia, and not a sweat shop in China. Yurts For Life make both Yurts and Gers, but I have to say that I find the making of yurts more aesthetically pleasing and satisfying, for a number of reasons.
With all that is going on, we will soon be introducing a fresh website and price lists in Sterling and Euros
Our yurts are made from locally-sourced ash & the covers are of 100% cotton or polycotton canvas.
Our customers cover a wide spectrum within the UK and Europe (with customers from Norway to Spain). Our UK customers include both private and public concerns. We are regularly helping farms and landowners to set up their own yurt camp site.
Our yurt hire stock is increasing all the time. We are able to supply large yurts (24 and 33 foot) for events such as weddings, parties, exhibitions and shows. We have a number of medium-sized camping yurts ideal for " glamping" complete with wooden beds, wood-burner and luxurious furnishings. We are regularly approached by people wishing to set up yurt holidays or camping yurts and are familiar with the issues (Planning, durability, furnishing, heating etc). If this is you, give us a ring for a friendly chat. If you have never stayed in a yurt, this is a good place to start. We are yurt enthusiasts and welcome contacts from individuals and companies who share this passion.
"You cannot fail to be stunned by the interior of this Yurt! It was absolutely fantastic and made our Wedding Day really special. Everyone was impressed by the beautifully crafted framework and how light it was inside. Rod and his team are the best; they were friendly, helpful and very efficient from start to finish. So if you are looking for a really impressive Yurt for your event then we would definitely recommend this one... You will not be disappointed." Mr & Mrs Ellaway - Devon
Yurts can be decorated in different styles but flowers and natural objects look stunning in a yurt.
"the yurt provides space for worship or meetings for up to 50 people. In winter the yurt is warm and cosy thanks to a log burning stove. In the summer the walls can be peeled back to let in the breeze and the summer sun" ("Outlook" magazine).
